Every year just before the rain season, the large female Tiger fish migrate up the river from Lake Kariba to spawn. These fish are concentrated in the section of river we access. This river section makes the last part of the rapid system that starts below Victoria Falls. This is a drop-pool system with rapids and pools. Our boat drivers navigate the boats and guests through these rapids and pools to target the tigers and other prime freshwater angling species.
The fishing is done primarily while drifting on the boats and this allows anglers to cover more water and to also present the fly, lure or drift bait in the most natural way possible. Anglers can also fish from rocky islands or walk and fish from the shore. At times it is just as much fun to walk down one of the smaller channels and target smaller Tigers on light tackle as it is to hook trophy fish on heavier tackle in the main channel. The main size of Tigers in this area are 3-5kg although there are specimens up to 7kg that are caught from time to time.

Gateway to Tiger Mile – Confluence of Deka and Zambezi Rivers
Sundowner Zambezi Lodge is set on what used to be known as "grassy banks", over looking the "Deka Tiger Mile". Close to the confluence of the Deka and mighty Zambezi River. - In the early morning, before the wind picks up on the surface with a custom tied dry capenta fish imitation. Difficult to beat the adrenaline rush of a Tiger smashing your fly off the surface. A crazy combination of finesse to fish the fly combined with the violence of the ferocious fish.
- Swinging flies in the faster river sections. This art requires a fly fisher to position the fly in the correct position and depth by casting the line out sideways from the boat and controlling the line so that it “swings” around into the current. The “swinging” creates some intense movement on the fly which makes it an extremely realistic imitation of a bait fish pattern.
- Shallow super strip over rapids with an intermediate fly line. Tigers often hunt the bait fish that frequent the highly oxygenated, shallow, fast moving rapid areas. You need to cast upstream so that you can strip the fly back through the rapid and towards the boat. The result is often a super aggressive strike that has the fish powering upriver which the fly line literally throwing a spray of water as it zips through the current.

My trip to Sundowner Zambezi Lodge was amazing, the fishing was great. The biggest fish I caught was a a 17.5 kg Vundu. The view of the river from the main area was so beautiful. The people there were so kind even to cook some of the fish we caught. It was quite astonishing to see the skipper navigate the rocks going in almost zig-zags all the way.
